There was more information than I expected. I guess that it was not more information, but different information. My favorite finding was about Carl Arvid Carlquist corispondent letters. I found this interesting on a few points. First I thought that it was so odd that someone would post such a finding on the internet, and second it was different to me because I had not idea that Carl Arvid Carlquist was interested in politics. As I thought about this I realized that although I have always considered my family research “done” I really don’t know much about my ancestors. I called my mom, and found out that one of my ancestors on my mother’s side wrote and invented the Encyclopedia of Chiropractic: The Howard System which is a chiropractic system published in National School of Chiropractic in Chicago, and is still studied today. As I learn more about family research I realize that genelogy is more than entering dates, but about finding people and building relationship. It is exciting.. in it’s own way!

Reg write up for assignment #4

Joy Prior
The family I chose to research comes from a hardback book with engraved golden letters reading No Regrets: The Life of Carl A. Carlquist across the blue cover. The author’s name is Myrtle McDonald and although I know that I am related to her I could not tell you specifically how. She wrote a narrative family history about Carl A. Carlquist our ancestor years ago, and each of the decedents of Carl A. Carlquist received a copy of the book. I read it once in High school, and can remember some of the stories. I cannot remember all of the names, and I most surely cannot remember the dates. I chose this family because I think that it will be a good place to start. The book already has ample research, and I want to use it as one of my main references. I also chose to do the Carlquist family because I realized during the class that simply because family research is “done” and the temple work completed it does not mean that I have completed my calling in family research. It struck me that family research is more than just making sure that the names get it to the temple, but family research is learning and identifying with my ancestors. I should use all the resources and research that has already been done to build my own personal connection with those who have gone before me.

Reg Assignment #3

Assignment #3
Joy Marie Prior

For my family history class we were assigned to log onto the new.familysearch.org and to explore the website. It was a simple enough activity: click on a few icons, watch the required tutorials, and print off a few sheets of paper. The only problem was that my records are in the process of being transferred from my home ward to my student ward. That means that until my records get into my new bishopric’s hands I am not a member of the church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. I found this all out after I signed up for the class, and before the add/drop deadline. The first day I sat in the BYU family history center for an hour and clicked the same buttons over and over, every time I got kicked off the new.familysearch.org. Then I had a teacher assistant come over and try all the same buttons I had tried. The next day I called the number on the help screen and talked to a women for over an hour. She told me to try all the same buttons I had tried earlier in her New Zealand accent, but the buttons still did not work. After that I got transferred, and this is when I found out that my login name will not work until my records are transferred… I tried again the next day, but no luck. Finally, I convinced my mom to let me use her login information and I was able to print off the assignment. By the time I finished with the first real assignment I was just about to log onto my BYU student page and click the “drop class” button. What kind-a summer class is this I thought to myself. This thought made me blush as I realized how disrespectful and truly impatient I was acting. There are millions of my spiritual brothers and sisters patiently waiting to have their family history work done, and I can not even wait for one hour on the telephone. I realized too how I have taken my me membership in the church for gratitude. It has been less than a week that my records have been lost in cyberspace, and the biggest difference in my life was I could not log onto a website. I could just feel someone puzzled at my childishness; there are souls who have not ever had their records on the church. Unlike me they are hurt a little more than being denied access to a webpage for a few days, they are being denied access into God’s presence. My records will not be recognized by the church until the student secretary mails in a little paper work, but their records will not be recognized by the church until their prodigy are baptized, their genealogy completed, and their names verified and submitted to the Temple. It was humbling to realized how anxious and patient all of God’s children must feel as the good news of Salvation is being carried to every corner of the earth; both seen and unseen.

Reg Assignment #2 2nd draft:)

My name is Joy Marie Prior and these are a two of my favorite things. Don’t worry, I will be able to feel the page quota because I want to do more than list off my favorite things in a question and answer form (I would find that a waste of time). I want to tell you why these are my favorite things, because I feel like that would be a better way to show you who I am. You see, my favorite things are my favorites because out of all the things I like these are what I like best, what I prefer.
Favorite Color: Yellow
I have a firm belief that people really only know someone when they can say what their favorite colors is. It is probably a biased opinion because I like colors, more than I like shapes or designs; I like colors. Last night I realized that I like the color purple; the bashful shade of purple that dusted the billowing edges of the mandarin orange clouds when the sun was setting. When I got dressed I admitted to myself that I love the color turquoise because when I wear it my eyes pop out. After I got my rough draft back from my professor it reaffirmed my conviction that reds are probably my least favorite shades, but I have learned to like a shade of coral. In general I like all colors though.
Sometimes at the grocery store when I think no one is looking I go to the paint isle to look at the colors. If I am sure that no one is watching I pick out the samples that catch my eye. The colors I get vary as drastically as the weather I chose a pasty pinks, toucan oranges, daisy yellows, or burnt black. Last time I went to the store I was with two of my old friends from High School. We are all in college now and not much older than when we first meet, but after listening to their memories I realized that in their memories I am the slightly-crazier-than-you-but-not-dangerous-enough-to-worry-your-parents-friend. We were recounting the time that the police pulled us over for walking across the picnic tables at the baseball park while we tried putting a scavenger hunt clue on the underside of the roof. Without thinking I turned down the paint isle and asked them if they wanted to pick out their favorite colors with me. That day I had to pick four colors: chocolate brown, electric orange, forest green, and ocean blue, because I just could not decided which one I liked more and which one fit my mood best. They laughed and babbled on about how cool this was, because it was so unexpected and odd that surly only people as unique as us would think to do such an outlandish thing. I smiled to myself; I take paint samples from the store far to often to even find it unique anymore.
My favorite color of yellow is the shade that circles the edge of the sun just before sundown. It is almost the shade of a ripe mango, but more creamy and less vivid. Some people mistake it as the same shade as a sunflower but the color of yellow that I like is more bright than that and less common.

Favorite Food: Cinnamon roll
A favorite food is a difficult choice because food varies from place to place and cook to cook. For the food I eat everyday I am kind-a a granola I like to eat spinach salads, black beans and rice, and cereal with a sliced banana. When I feel like a treat I put Adam’s Natural Peanut butter in between two gram crackers and pour myself a glass of whole milk. I also like to dip potato chips in Brigham Young University Vanilla ice-cream, but I don’t like to eat potato chips alone.
A few weeks ago I visited Hawaii, and the family that I stayed with believed that food is the language of love. I had some of the best pastries I have ever had! This is significant because I dislike donates, I actually used to think that I hated donates but then I tried the ones in Hawaii and realized that some donates are ok, except for the chocolate covered donates. Gag! It is just not normal to like something that feels like mud and taste like lard that had water added to it and then was dyed brown. Maybe I like chocolate covered donates in South Africa… I have never been to South Africa and I don’t know if they have good chocolate donates or not. So, basically I like a lot of the donates in Hawaii, dislike the donates in the Provo bakery, and have never tired a chocolate covered donate from South Africa so I can not tell you if I like those kind or not.
My favorite food is cinnamon rolls. The kind of cinnamon rolls that my mother makes. Not the store bought ones that come in a package; you might as well just buy a pound of sugar and eat that. There are some bakery ones that I like, but sometimes the frosting is to heavy. My favorite cinnamon rolls are made from a light dinner roll dough and filled with cinnamon and sugar. I would rather have the curves of the dough to large than to thin. The frosting is the pure white and made from just powder sugar and a little melted butter. When I was little I used to help my mom cut the cinnamon rolls with a piece of mint dental floss that cut through the rolled up dough better than a knife. I am the youngest of nine, and now that everyone is married and has children of their own there can be fifty of us at a one family dinner. My mom rarely makes homemade cinnamon rolls anymore. Instead she makes cinnamon wands, which are strips of dough covered in cinnamon and sugar that are twisted instead of rolled. They taste just as good if not better that a traditional cinnamon roll because they have more room for more frosting, and they are quicker to make. I think that is why I like cinnamon rolls best, because I know when they are coming out of the oven and you drizzling the frosting across the steaming golden brown rolls dripping in sticky cinnamon that someone had to put in the extra time to slice the dough with dental floss.

Rel devotional quote

“It is our responsibility to strive to find where we can make a contribution to our fellowman—an area where we have some interest and abilities and where we can, at the same time, provide for our own.
“I am glad Beethoven found his way to music, Rembrandt into art, Michelangelo into sculpturing, and President David O. McKay into teaching. To find your proper niche and do well at it can bless you, yours, and your fellowmen. If you need help in finding your career, it is available: Ponder and pray about it; study closely your patriarchal blessing; consider what you do well; take some vocational and interest tests; and get acquainted with various professions to see what is available” (The Teachings of Ezra Taft Benson, p. 484-485).

I am Joy Marie Prior, and I am excited to be a part of your child’s learning experience this summer. A little about me is that I grew up on a Dairy Farm in Springville Utah. My summers were filled with days of running through fields of alfalfa and felling the mud squish between my toes. In the winters the snow-slush would fly into my eyelashes and the cold turned my already pink checks a fire engine red when I raced my older brother down the snow packed hill near our home. Compared to the constant blast of the train whistles and rattling of the tracks in front of our family farm the first day of Kindergarten seemed ridiculously quite. I liked my teacher well enough; she had chestnut brown hair that she kept in large curls close to her head. Naturally, I have always been a curious person but in Kindergarten I began to love school: the cheap pasted projects, the paperback books, and the pasty color of the #2 pencils. In all honesty I am as anxious to learn as much as I hope that your children are. I welcome your feedback and hope that we can develop a sense of trust as we all being to learn this semester.

Rel Assignment #1

Religion C 261 – Sister Kelly Summers

Assignment #1 – Introduction Letter – 5pts

Please include the following elements as a part of your letter:
1. Name
Joy Marie Prior
2. Brief background of yourself
I am currently a student at Brigham Young University. I’m the average height of five feet and five inches but in my family I am about six inches shorter than the rest. My hair is what I like to call a honey blond, my eyes are a vivid blue, and my skin is more of a strawberry milk cream color than actually white. Truthfully, I like clothes more than I have ever liked to do my hair or makeup. I like to get dressed and I have an odd obsession with matching my outfit with my mood. When I introduce myself I always say, “I am from Spanish Fork, and that is about twenty minutes south from Provo. I grew up on a dairy farm out there. I’m the youngest of nine.” And if their eyes bug up when I say that I am the youngest of nine (as if that is too large of a family even by Mormon standards) I add, “I come from a mixed family.” I usually don’t like to add this last part because it makes my life sound more complicated than it actually is, and I don’t like to think of my siblings as anything than my siblings.
3. General knowledge of your ancestry
I guess that if you want my heritage background I am a regular European-middleclass-American-mutt, but I like myself that way. My ancestors came from England, Ireland, Swedish, and a little Welch. My grandfather’s sister wrote a book about of family heritage, and I read it during High school but have not looked at it again. Once in a while I have logged onto the church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saint website to figure out if I should do family history work, but from what I can understand on the website the names, dates, and work have been filled out.
4. Why are you taking this class?
Question number 3 leads to my response for this question. I don’t know how I am supposed to fulfill this commandment. After reading the scriptures and being inspired by the words of the prophets I understand that it is important that I do family research I just do not know how to or what I should do. My prayer is that this class will teach me the foundations and give me the insights that will help me to know how to do my own family research.
